Ericsson GA628 and S868

As these phones look fairly similar and use the exact same kind of battery (NiMH 4.8V) I decided to tackle both at the same time to compare them. Mike from Mike's Electric Stuff has also ventured into the GA628 and has written about it here. Now, let's start with the GA628:

GA628:

Top left is the ringtone speaker, below that the two contacts are for the small speaker used during conversations. I noticed something unusual when i opened this phone - oily crud from the conductive part of the rubber keypad. I've opened equipment far older than this with the came kind of contact pads but never encountered that before.

The four LED's in a row are pointed downwards and serves as a backlight for the LCD. The IC is an Atmel 24C64 EEPROM.

If you compare my pictures to the ones at mike's you might notice that in the second section two devices have changed places and he has an ericsson chip in the center where I have a philips one. This might mean that this phone was made earlier than his.

This model does not have the SIM card slot mounted on the board, instead it is mounted on the backpiece, connected via the 6 pads to the top right. Note the conncetor to the right of the processor, it is acessable from the back of the phone by removing the screw beneath the warranty seal. Possibly used for reprogramming.
